Day 36: We're going to Salzburg!

Not a great deal to really to say of interest today, given it was a commute day.  Well at least for the morning.  We farewelled our lovely host in Garmisch, then spent an uneventful though beuatiful two hours or so driving to Salzburg.  The highlight of the trip was stopping at a roadside stop for breakfast, and they had weisswurst!
We had checked into our Salzburg apartment by 1PM, another really nice apartment this time up on the 3rd floor.  The apartment caretaker, Frau Oezlum had pretty much no English to speak of, but we all managed to get keys and basic messages across.
We then wandered through town, then through the Mirabell gardens and across the river into the old town, had a bratwurst hot dog for lunch in one of the town squares, dodged a few gypsies here and there (there are quite a few gypsies here in Salzburg!) then furniculared up to the Salzburg castle.

Was this craze started by Lockwood or something?
This was another fine example of an undefeated fortress high on a hilltop.  This one had some actual surviving decorations in the staterooms from the 14th and 15th centuries, as well as a really cool art sculpture using armour, a marionette museum with a hidden cave of treasures underneath, a tower full of torture equipment, 360 degree panoramic views of the plains around Salzburg which were still amazing even though it was hazy today, and a nice terrace café where we finished up our visit with a beautiful dinner, before walking back along the river to our new home.
Creepy Nutcracker dolls

Now, what could they be looking at....

Those Romans sure got about
How cool is that!
Making sure the Capuchin monks kept brewing that beer

Some more photos from Salzburg...
